The Strut-Esteem Program is comprised of modeling, acting and broadcast journalism. The program is designed for the after school and summer camp setting. Created by fashion model and entrepreneur Shaw Bernard, the program is heavily centered around self-esteem, leadership, personal and academic development. The use of the performing arts in this program is done in a very non-traditional and highly engaging manner to build up each student.
To date, the Strut-Esteem Program has been adopted by EBC High School for Public Service. Achieving great success in its second year, the program ended with a fashion show to celebrate the students’ growth. Shaw has coined the show “EBC Beauties Fashion Show” to further drive home the point that each participant is beautiful in their own right. The students were draped in fashions from designers and boutiques around New York City.
“I have had the privilege of working with Ms. Bernard for approximately one and a half years now. The program helps students to develop self-confidence, social and academic skills. Ms. Bernard’s approach to dealing with the students’ social and emotional issues is innovative and different. Students take pride in their appearance and speech because of the program. The culminating event, the fashion show brought the entire school community together. I plan on working with Ms. Bernard each year because of the success of the program.” Principal Shawn Brown.
“I am really glad to have joined this program because for one thing i found out something awesome about my self i can rock an outfit. I have gained self confidence, I did not think I was pretty but the day we did that fashion show I felt like a beautiful star. I felt like I was on top of the world. My teacher is the one I should genuinely thank because she was the one who made the program all the more enjoyable and fun.Her teachings were amazing to learn and surprisingly I found new talents that I never knew I had. I experienced something incredible and I hope this program continues on showing girls just like myself a star in themselves in which they will never forget.” Daniela, Student
“This experience was fun and I took a lot from it.I liked the idea of anyone being able to be apart of this after school program and being able to become a model no matter size, height, or look, all that mattered was commitment. I gained more confidence and a bit more attitude in my walk and in my presence. I obtained abilities to multi-task, and strengthen my communication skills with others. I could use this experience to my advantage by using the things I learned in interviews, working field, or school. This was an unforgettable experience in my life and I am glad I was part of this program.” Pamela, Student
